HISTORY
In the traditional brewhouses in the cathedral city, herb liqueurs have always been served with Kölsch beer or as a digestif after a hearty meal, and they are currently seeing a renaissance. Gaffel is tapping into this trend with a well-preserved family recipe.
The new semi-sweet liqueur from Cologne has an alcohol volume of 30% and, with its soft fruity and spicy flavour, conveys the Mediterranean flair that Cologne exudes all year round with its open and hospitable atmosphere. This atmosphere is said to stem from the Roman founding fathers and mothers of our beautiful metropolis on the Rhine. The name “MAMMA NERO” is therefore an homage to the mother of Roman Emperor Nero who, in 50 AD, ensured that the city “Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium” received the status of a city.
The mother of the Emperor was born here in Cologne in 15 AD and was known as “Julia Agrippina” (Agrippina the Younger), daughter of Germanicus, who was the commander of the legions stationed in Germania.
The founder of Cologne is symbolised today by the maiden in the "Dreigestirn" (triumvirate) during Cologne Carnival.
